June 25, 2006 - Warren
Buffett, 75-year-old Berkshire Hathaway chairman and chief executive
officer, the world's second- richest person, announced will give away
85 percent of his $44 billion fortune ($30.7 billion); biggest
individual pledge to charity ever. Most of the money will go to the
Bill and Melinda gates foundation started by Bill Gates; starting in
July 2006 - annual gifts of company shares pledged to the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation (world's largest philanthropic organization),
three organizations headed by his children and the family foundation
renamed in honor of his late wife. Buffett placed three conditions on
the gift to the Gates Foundation: Bill or Melinda Gates must be alive
and active in the administration of the foundation; the organization
must qualify as a charity; and the value of the gift must be spent in
total, as well as at least 5 percent of the foundation's net assets.
Gates foundation has made grant commitments since its inception of
$10.5 billion; gave away $1.36 billion in 2005; major gifts and
pledges included $1.5 billion to the Global Alliance for Vaccines, $1
billion to the United Negro College Fund and $258 million to the
Malaria Vaccine Initiative.
