Images of
prosperity, suburbia, a smiling President Eisenhower, cars with
tail fins, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, "golden age" of
television; hysteria of McCarthyism, shadow of the atomic bomb,
war in Korea, Soviet threat manifested in the launch of Sputnik
and the personality of Nikita Khrushchev, new regional challenges
to American power (rise of Nasser in Egypt, Castro in Cuba, and
Communist regimes in North Korea, Vietnam, and China), clash over
the integration of public buses in Montgomery, Alabama, and a high
school in Little Rock, Arkansas, rise of the "beats," continuing
development of jazz, emergence of rock ‘n’ roll, the art of
Jackson Pollock, civil rights, environmentalism, the
counterculture, "movements" on behalf of women, Latinos, and
Native Americans.February 9, 1950
- Senator Joe McCarthy (R-WI) delivered a Lincoln Day
address to local Republicans in Wheeling, WV. He declared, "I have
here in my hand a list of 205 [members of the Communist Party]
still working and shaping policy in the State Department."
McCarthy tapped into this current of anticommunism sentiment
already embraced by the Republican Party and turned it into a
flood.
